Here is your chance to work with one of our talented artists, to take your tattoo idea, symbol, or slogan and have them expertly work it into a beautiful design.

Each participating artist has his or her own forum. To contact an artist, simply choose that artist’s forum and start a new thread. Together you will work out the details of the design.

Currently on the forum we have Jeff Johnson, part owner and manager of Sea Tramp Tattoo Co. in Portland, OR. Jeff has been tattooing for 15 years, and is renowned for his art and flash. You can find many examples of his flash on this website, and you can see his tattoo portfolio here.

Sea Tramp Tattoo Co. won the 2007 award for Best Portland Tattoo Shop - CitySearch.

The Custom Tattoo Process - Jeff Johnson

I use the pretty much the same process on the custom tattoo forum that I use with my customers at the tattoo shop. In order to ensure that the customer ends up with the perfect custom design:

1. I establish what you are looking for, using your description, as well as questions and answers. I encourage you to post pictures with your thread or email them to us to aid with your description if necessary.

2. Once your request has been established I will recommend either the three-draft process (for simpler designs) or the single-draft process (for larger designs such as back pieces or sleeves).

Three draft process
: I'll do three drafts from which you can pick your favorite aspects and suggest any changes you might want to make. Once we settle on the design, I'll do the final version in color or black and grey, whichever you choose, with a line drawing (stencil) to take to your artist.

Single draft process: I'll do a single draft that you can give feedback on and we will modify for you until you're totally happy with it. Once we settle on the design, I'll do the final version in color or black and grey, whichever you choose, with a line drawing (stencil) to take to your artist.

3. I will give you a quote. My rates range from $40 (for a very simple design) to $300 (for a very detailed backpiece, for example). If we are in agreement, I will then send you a PayPal invoice. You can choose to pay either all in advance, or half in advance and half before I do the final (shaded) version. If you want pricing examples, look at different threads in the forum.

4. I will email you the drafts, do any revisions you would like, email the revised draft if necessary. When we have perfected the rough design I will email you the final (shaded) version with the stencil (line drawing). You take both versions to your tattoo artist. They will use the stencil to make a transfer that will transfer the stencil directly onto your skin. Then they will use the shaded version as a color / shading guide.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! If you would rather not post on the forum you can email me: jeffjohnsontattoos@hotmail.com and the process will be exactly the same.
